Halston and Warhol: Silver and Suede
May 18 – August 24, 2014
The exhibition Halston and Warhol: Silver and Suede examines the interconnected lives and creative practices of Andy Warhol and Halston – two American icons who had a profound impact on the development of 20th century art and fashion. The exhibition has been organized by The Andy Warhol Museum and Lesley Frowick (the niece of Halston). Drawing on the collections of The Warhol, The Museum at FIT, Lesley Frowick, Chris Royer (former Halston model and Design Director of Halston Enterprises), Des Moines Art Center as well as others. The exhibition integrates Halston’s garments and accessories with photography, video and paintings by Warhol.

20th Anniversary Collection Rehang
Opening May 18
To mark its 20th Anniversary, The Warhol, the most comprehensive single artist museum in the world, is undertaking a major redesign of its collection galleries. This rehang of the collection represents the most comprehensive review of the museum’s collection of Warhol’s artwork and archival materials since it opened in 1994.
Chronologically organized across five of the museum’s seven floors, it will feature masterpieces from the collection alongside rarely seen artworks and archival material.

The Warhol is thrilled to welcome Neutral Milk Hotel, to the Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland. As a much anticipated follow-up to Jeff Mangum’s stellar sold out, solo performance at the hall in January 2013, he returns with the full band including Scott Spillane, Julian Koster, and Jeremy Barnes. The band has had a profound impact over the past two decades on indie folk/rock music, largely due to their most recognized record, In The Aeroplane Over The Sea. Released in 1998 on Merge Records. The psychedelic-folk collective, Elf Power, from Athens, open the show.

The Warhol welcomes Tinariwen, a Tuareg group from the Sahara Desert in northern Mali. With a name meaning “empty places,” reflecting their land of origin, the group formed in 1979 in rebel camps of Colonel Gaddafi, having been forced from their nomadic lifestyle into involuntary military service. Swapping traditional lutes and shepherd’s flutes for electric guitars and drums, the group has developed their own unique style that blends elements of western blues/rock, African tribal chants and Middle Eastern traditional music.

The Warhol welcomes Brooklyn-based artist and electronic music composer, Daniel Lopatin (aka Oneohtrix Point Never) to its entrance space, on a tour supporting his latest release R Plus Seven on Warp Records. Lopatin has built his live soundscapes at The Museum of Modern Art and Tate Britian, and on this tour, beyond The Warhol, he will perform at the Wexner Center in Columbus and the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. Artist and collaborator, Nate Boyce, will provide live visual accompaniment. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.

The Warhol welcomes Bob Colacello, a close collaborator, confidante, and business partner of Andy Warhol, to speak about his recently repackaged book HOLY TERROR: Andy Warhol Close Up. Originally published in 1990, the book offers a rare and definitive portrait of Warhol as an enigmatic cultural titan and includes over 60 photos of stars, such as Truman Capote, Diane von Furstenberg, Diana Vreeland, and Mick Jagger, that constellated around him. This program is part of The Warhol’s 20th Anniversary Community Day.

Join Time Capsules Cataloguer Erin Byrne, Chief Archivist Matt Wrbican, Assistant Archivist Cindy Lisica and special guest Benjamin Liu as they take the first look inside one of Andy Warhol’s mysterious boxes! Benjamin Liu is a former personal and studio assistant for Warhol and co-authored of the book, Unseen Warhol. Warhol was an avid collector of art, Fiestaware, photographs, newspapers, dental molds and especially the minutiae of his daily life.

The Factory (Underground Studio)

The Factory is a lively studio program where Museum visitors can create art alongside artist/educators while exploring Warhol’s artistic practice. It’s a collaborative environment where visitors investigate ideas about art and culture while working alongside artist/educators, staff and volunteers.
Daily Gallery Talks
Experience a range of topics including Warhol’s work practices and more. Subjects vary depending on current exhibitions and guest speaker. Guest speakers include curators, artist educators, and more. These 30 minute talks include time for visitors to present their own perspectives and questions.

Warhol’s film and video works screened in our theater during museum hours.
The Warhol receives state arts funding support through a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency; and The Heinz Endowments. Further support is provided by the Allegheny Regional Asset District.
