In honor of its 20th anniversary, The Andy Warhol Museum, the most comprehensive single artist museum in the world, kicks off a year-long celebration with a gala event on May 17, 2014. The anniversary celebration also includes the opening of a special exhibition, Halston and Warhol: Silver and Suede, a reinstallation of The Warhol’s permanent collection, the premiere of a short biopic film on Andy Warhol, and a special auction with Paddle8 benefiting The Warhol.
For more information about the 20th Anniversary celebration please visit www.warhol.org/20.
The Warhol’s director Eric Shiner states, “It is difficult to believe that Pittsburgh’s beloved Warhol Museum turns 20 this year. As one of hundreds of people who queued up to see the museum on its opening night, I am delighted to celebrate this momentous birthday full-tilt Warhol style! If you haven’t been to The Warhol before, or if it’s been a while, I can safely tell you that now is the time. I know that the new face of The Warhol will both inspire and delight and our entire team can’t wait to share our stories, collections and programming with our visitors near and far.”
Gala co-chair Ann McGuinn states, “It’s often said that ‘lightning never strikes twice.’ Well at The Warhol there will be an exception! I had the privilege of chairing the museum’s opening in 1994 and now co-chairing the 20th Anniversary May 16-18. Thousands attended the opening weekend in 1994 and thousands will be here again to celebrate this milestone. What a privilege this has been.”
Maureen Kerr, Gala co-chair states, “I doubt Andy Warhol ever expected that a museum would be dedicated to his impressions of life as art. Nor would he have envisioned that The Warhol would be a cultural magnet attracting attention and visitors to his home town from around the world. The 20th anniversary of The Warhol will be celebrated this May and heralded in many of the cities where Andy’s art has toured globally. As an ambassador for the city he is true to his roots and people from every walk of life are on a first name basis with him as a result. It’s Andy all the way and I am proud to be a part of it!”
